Breeding system Commercial considerations,of pollen

Breeding systems

Generally, the self-pollinated plants are homozygous and do not show any depletion in quality due to inbreeding. Cross pollinated, crops on the other hand, are highly heterozygous. So, the breeding systems are different for the two types of plants. The self-pollinated crops are protected from any contamination from foreign pollen grain naturally and are stable. While the Cross pollinated plants have to be protected from any contamination from foreign pollen grain.

Commercial uses

The knowledge of the mode of the reproduction of crop plants is important for making artificial hybrids. For developing hybrids we need a male and a female plant. To ensure Cross pollination we can select plants which are either male sterile or self-incompatible. By using this technique various insect resistant, pest resistant, disease resistant, high yielding, better quality varieties have been developed.
