Hybrid seed production

Hybrid seed production

The varieties with heterozygous dominant and recessive genotypes will produce two types of pollen grains. These are known as dimorphic pollen grains. Hybridization is a process in which two different plant are crossed together to form seeds- the hybrid seeds. To prevent self pollination in these plants it is convenient that the female parent should have non- functional pollen grains. Hybrid seed production involve following steps-

 1) Multiplication of CMS (A) lines  These are male sterile lines, which act as female parent
.
2) Multiplication of maintainer (B) and Restorer (R) lines-
B- Line is the fertile variety of the plant, having same characters as (A).
R- Line carries the genes for fertility restoration.

3) Production of hybrid seed by crossing (A) X (R) lines.
